Turn Your Eyes

Today was a beautiful autumn afternoon. I sat on my deck soaking in the warm sunshine. My cats were outside with me, and I heard a sound in the dry leaves on the ground, as I turned to look, at first, I couldn’t see. The only thing I could see was the outline of the sun – everything else was dim. I had to blink a few times to focus. It seemed strange, like I was trying to see something that I wasn’t a part of. I knew the sound was my cat just a few feet from me, yet it seemed so far away as I tried to focus.

It reminded me of my walk with Jesus. If we keep our focus on Him, our “Sonshine” when look away at the world around us, we can’t really see it. We’re not a part of the world or so it seems. It all looks far away and dim to us.

I found myself singing the song that I heard in church last Sunday; it’s one of my favorites:

“Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Look full in His wonderful face

And the things of this earth

Will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace.

As we keep our eyes on Him, the things of this earth will lose their hold on us, and we begin to experience the peace, joy and righteousness of His Kingdom even now.

“Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added onto you” Matthew 6:33
